Watch This Now: Collarbones – “Missing”

“I took this info, burned your name in it, when I dream of you…”

When I was nineteen, I was waiting out the front of a venue for a show. These two guys who couldn’t have been much older than me were attempting to get in. “We’re Collarbones,” said one (Marcus Whale) to the security guard. “We’re playing tonight.” The guard looked at these two scrawny kids and said “Yeah? Where’s your instruments?” The other one (Travis Cook) smiled, swung to the side and revealed a laptop bag. Part of me remembers this vividly for two reasons. Firstly because it reminded me of the opening part of the Beastie BoysNo Sleep Til Brooklyn video (music video nerd for life, y’all!), but secondly because I’d never really thought about it that way. There is a world of sounds and compositions inside what most people just use to check their emails. Perhaps a revelation that should have come earlier? Whatever. It kind of blew my little mind, and I have been a fervent supporter of them from that very night onwards.

I don’t know exactly why I was compelled to tell you that story, but hear me out. Collarbones have a new video, and it’s for what’s already become one of my favourite songs of 2012. It’s a black-and-white acid trip, with chopped up footage of what looks like a movie (any buffs help me with this one?) and bizarre, booming visuals that look like your old Windows Media Player plug-in was sabotaged by aliens. The best thing is how stimulating this is for a low-budget affair. It reflects the simmering, dark nature of the track and veers into its own nastier territory, giving the song an entirely new context within the clip. I guess all I’m really trying to say is that I love Collarbones. You should too.
