“So long to this wretched form, them grey eyes on the subway…”
Those crazy Shins are at it again! It wasn’t too long ago that James Mercer and his all-new band were running through an old house set for destruction in the delightful Simple Song video. For the second single from Port of Morrow, however, the band have opted out of the clip entirely. This is an animated affair – and, in what I believe is a first for any music video ever, the clip for The Rifle’s Spiral made its debut on Nintendo 3DS. You were able to watch the video through Nintendo Video, a very curious and interesting new initiative, until the 23rd of last month. Now it’s finally at home on the interwebs, where it belongs – and it’s safe to say it was worth the wait for those of us without a 3DS.
This dark, almost Burtonesque animated tale revolves around a cute little rabbit that is taken hostage by three mustachioed magicians. They manipulate the poor thing and attempt to make it a by-product of their black magic, but the thing manages to escape and find an unlikely friend in a good witch. I think that’s what’s going on, anyway. I can’t offer much more insight than that – after all, it would be giving away the wondrous ending. All I can tell you for sure is that it’s a gorgeous clip, brilliantly animated and a delightful visual re-interpretation of the song. Very much looking forward to the band’s Australian return for Splendour in the Grass, too!
