“I gave my best, it wasn’t enough, you get upset, we argue too much…”
Yeah, I took Labour Day off. Yeah, I know I’m not Victorian. Shaddap! We’ve got videos to watch and all you can talk about is Monday? Fuhgeddaboutit! Let’s get on to one of the most talked-about songs of the year – news spread like wildfire that awesome producer Diplo would be working with Usher earlier in 2012, but it’s safe to say that no-one quite expected anything like this deep, velvety heartbroken slow-jam. Continuing on with the trend, the video for Climax is unlike anything Usher has done video-wise in years. No clubs, no booty and only a little bit of sex. OK, maybe a fair bit of sex.
There’s some bizarre narrative going on here, in which Usher is seemingly playing both the person having the affair and the person that is being cheated on. No words are spoken by these characters, interspersed only with Usher performing the song. All we can see is a gun, his car, an imminent car crash and him running into the same house twice. The end is inconclusive, but it certainly makes for a very interesting clip. It’s already been quite challenging for his fanbase, too – normally, the top comments on his videos are something about his abs or how good-looking he is. At last check, the top comment of Climax on YouTube was something along the lines of “I have no idea what just happened.” Maybe you don’t have to in order to appreciate what Usher went for here.
