“You start calling, you start crying, I come over, I’m inside you…”
As Community wraps up filming for its third – and, sadly, potentially final – series, one of the show’s stars has brought the focus back to his music. Yep, when Donald Glover isn’t making you laugh as Troy Barnes, he is Childish Gambino, who both released one of my favourite songs (Freaks and Geeks) and one of my favourite albums (his major-label debut, CAMP) of 2011. This video, his second in promotion of it, comes from the latter. The narrative is even harder to follow than its predecessor, Bonfire, but it suits the mood of the song perfectly, developing an entirely new storyline that you might not have picked up on the first time.
Glover once again finds himself in a central role, pursuing a love interest by driving them to a cliched makeout point, and then being driven back. They don’t sit next to one another, except when they make out in the backseat at the point that they drive to and from. It’s about as un-romantic as it can possibly get – is it a routine? Something done in secret? Does it mean anything more to either of them?
Unfortunately, none of these questions are answered in the video – there’s only so much time in the song, of course. With that said, this could also be seen as beneficial to a viewer – the story is now yours to do what you wish with it. How it ends, and how it got to that point, is entirely up to you. I, for one, am happy to watch more of this in the absense of Community for now.
