“Please don’t try to serenade me, I’m a one-man band…”
We’re only in the early stages of 2012, so it’s often tough at this point to predict who the big names will be for the rest of the year. I implore you, however, to make sure that you remember this one: friends, Romans, countrymen… meet Lianne La Havas. After a game-changing appearance on Later…With Jools Holland last year, this young lady is bringing her powerful soul-rock sounds to the world, opening for Bon Iver (or is that Bonny Bear?) on his U.S. tour and already scoring well into the hundred-thousands on her video views.
It’s time to add a couple more with her latest video, a neat little alt-pop extravaganza that makes all the difference with the little things. LLH is able to separate herself from the pack just from a few small aspects of the clip. There’s no huge choreography or a billion-dollar budget here. It’s in the expressions – the way she looks almost destroyed by the opener “Waste all your time writing love songs/But you don’t love me“ but still manages to look effortlessly cool. That sneaky look of satisfaction with the subtly destructive chorus refrain of “Forget/That I’m the person tearing you apart.” The lines are sold really well, and it’s all interspersed with some pretty cool split-screen effects. Given how easy on the eyes she is, I’m certainly not objecting to more than one LLH on my screen – even if she is tearing an ex-lover a new one. That name, once again, folks, is Lianne La Havas. Get on it before she’s at Adele levels of massiveness.
