Watch This Now: Amanda Palmer and the Grand Theft Orchestra – “Polly”

“I think she wants some water, to put out the blowtorch…”

In light of the news that Amanda Palmer will be dropping a long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s Who Killed Amanda Palmer?, let’s take a look at AFP’s most recent project. After covering Nirvana‘s track Polly a few months back for Newermind, SPIN Magazine’s tribute to 20 years of Nevermind, Palmer has done a collaborative effort to visualise the song in all of its stark, painful beauty.

The original never got an official video, so it’s interesting to see how Amanda and co. have interpreted the story of the song – it mostly makes reference to Krist Novoselic‘s recollection of how the song was written, and the disturbing story that went along with it. The victim, played by Jillian Taylor, and the kidnapper, played by Christopher M. McFarland, both portray their respective characters remarkably well. So much can be said by doing – and saying – so little. It is all conveyed without words, except for Palmer’s singing, and brings out the truly unsettling nature of the entire affair. I really love what they’ve done with it – it’s sure to upset some Nirvana purists, but I kind of feel like that’s half the point. Take a look and see what you get out of it.
