Top o’ the morning, lovelies! Welcome to another week of videos, and what better way to kick it all off than with the triumphant return of the motherfucking Foo Fighters – or, the Fooeys as they’ve been nicknamed here in Oz. The band have had a lot of talk leading up to their new album, Wasting Light, and for the first time in many, many years, it’s been overwhelmingly positive. No multimillion dollar studio – it was recorded in Dave Grohl‘s garage. No multimillion dollar production – old mate Butch Vig is behind the desk, using only analog recording material. Hell, even Pat Smear is back on board for this one, for the first time since 1996. It’s time to celebrate, and that’s exactly what the band have done with their awesome two new videos.
First up is the rock & roll insanity of White Limo. This is already a serious contender for the year’s best video, as we’re re-introduced to the band and their new line-up via a titular white limo, with none other than Lemmy from Motorhead driving the fucker! Lots of partying, lots of hilarious facial expressions and remarkably trashing filming and costumes. Also a cameo from Dave’s wife, for those of you playing at home.
Next, the brand-spanking new vid for the “official” single from the record, Rope. It’s a pretty straightforward rocker, and in turn gets itself a pretty straightforward rock video of the fivesome jamming out inside a white cube in what appears to be an abandoned warehouse. Normally, a video like this wouldn’t do much for me, but I really dig the on-the-cheap style of production and cinematography on this one – there’s a lot of handheld camera work, and cheesy special effects that are used with toungs very much planted in cheeks. If anything, it’s assisted me in liking the song even more than when I first heard it – so that’s gotta be a bonus.
Also of note to Sydney people: the Fooeys will be here next week, playing a secret gig! I think it’s on Goat Island, but keep an eye out for details and hit up the Channel [V] website for your chance to win tickets. Otherwise, just enjoy the videos! The Foo Fighters are BACK!
