“Go ahead and sell me out, and I’ll leave you ship bare…”
Remember Adele Adkins at all? Best known for her track Chasing Pavements – massive in the U.K., not so much here – Adkins had a strong debut album, 19, and then went AWOL. Her new album is 21, and it’s more than just two numbers added onto 19: it’s got her best song ever, and her best video to go with it. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Rolling in the Deep.
For a girl that was almost universally trashed by snarky critics and bitchy tabloids about her weight, Adele looks absolutely stunning in this video. She’s sexy, confident and curvy, belting out the chorus in a chair as she looks longingly into the distance. It’s not all about her, though – not that I’d be complaining if it was! No, there’s some great shots of what feels like a haunted house, some cool drumming shots that emphasise the huge beats of the song and, amazingly, a room filled with glasses of water. How on earth they were able to set that up is anyone’s guess, but it’s probably my favourite shot in the whole thing. Overall, an uber-cool video for what’s bound to be one of the best songs of the year. Get amongst it!
