“But that’s alright, because I like the way it hurts…”
Is there a hypocrisy in Eminem making hit singles with pop singers when ten years ago he was dissing the exact same kind of stars? Sort of, but not really – Em has made his way into pop culture, so doing tracks with Pink and Rihanna on his latest (and best in a long time) album, Recovery, wasn’t really the shocker that it would have been a few years ago. This track in particular has done great things for both parties, hitting the top of the charts worldwide – but without a music video! Up until now, that is.
This clip is much better than the last Em video for Not Afraid for a variety of reasons. For one, it’s not just self-congratulating grandeur (remember the scene where he actually starts fucking flying?) – there’s a plot to this one. Once we get away from Marshall rapping his little heart out in the middle of a field and those damn sexy RiRi closeups, Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan (yes, one of the Hobbits from LOTR) portray a couple in a twisted, abusive relationship. I’m not normally a fan of either by any stretch, but the emotions they portray throughout their cracked and broken lifestyle is very full-on and emotionally driven. Hell, the fact that Fox is even able to show emotion after all that plastic surgery she had is worth accolades in its own right. Watch out for the powerful argument and fight scenes – the moment where Monaghan’s character punches through the drywall and almost hits Fox is just immense. There’s a very good reason this video has spread like wildfire. As a matter of fact, it now holds a brand new YouTube record for the most views of a single video within a twenty-four hour period. Nice work to everyone involved – this is a really great video, one of Em’s best since Stan.
